A COUPLE of years
ago, we reviewed
Technomate’s TM-800HD
– a single tuner Linux HD box.
Although Technomate had sold
receivers with Linux-based
software previously, the TM-
800HD was its rst to benet
from a port of that powerful
Dreambox conception, the
Enigma 2 rmware. However,
the result was rather aky, mainly
because the TM-800HD was built
around NXP’s STB225 chipset,
instead of the Broadcom
hardware for which Enigma 2
was originally developed.

The large switch mode power
supply supports the extra
requirements of DiSEqC mounts,
while the main board is surprisingly
uncluttered. Most of the circuitry is
on one chip, specically a dual-core
BCM7335. This chip is cooled by a
heatsink and quiet running fan
mounted on the casework directly
above. A third board contains the
card reader.
Setup
A specic menu congures each
tuner for the relevant satellite(s). The
TM-2T OE can deal with multiple-
satellite arrangements, thanks to its
DiSEqC support. All Enigma-type
rmwares are based on a ‘common
chassis’, congured and used along
fundamentally identical lines, but
little ourishes here and there
(usually in the form of plugins)
specic to each can be found. One of
OpenViX’s is ‘AutoBouquetsMaker’.
Enigma 2 arranges channels in
specic lists known as ‘bouquets’,
and what this plugin does is speedily
create bouquets for specic providers.
Among the 15 currently listed is
Sky UK, and if you use it you’ll get a
bouquet that ‘mirrors’ the channel
lineup of a digibox or Freesat receiver.
Naturally, Enigma 2’s conventional
scanning modes are also available.
All channels, or just free ones, can be
found and stored. FEC, modulation
type and symbol rate can be specied
for manual searches, but PID entry is
disallowed. Currently there’s no blind
scan function, although Enigma’s
‘satnder’ plugin is pre-installed.
Other setup menus look after
networking, the EPG, software
updates, AV conguration, modulator
tuning and parental control. A

The TM-2T OE – as its name would
suggest –is a twin tuner unit that like
recent Dreamboxes is based around
Broadcom chippery, aided by 384MB
of RAM and no less than 1GB of
ash memory.
The ‘OE’ of the name stands for
‘Open Embedded’, and refers to the
kind of open source rmware that
the box can run. Our sample, from
World of Satellite, was pre-installed
with the OpenViX Enigma 2 variant
– although 4DTeam OpenPLi can
be specied as an alternative. WoS,
interestingly, sponsors development
of ViX Team rmwares. Like other
Enigma 2 variants, they’re exible
and can be customised by
downloadable ‘plugins’.
Build and connectivity
The diminutive TM-2T OE’s large
front panel uorescent display gives
you the currently selected channel’s
name during regular use. Around
this is ranged a joypad and other
basic controls, so you can operate
the box without the excellent handset.
Behind a ap resides a convenient
USB port plus a card slot that depends
on emulated CAMs (a function of
your rmware and ‘plugins’).
There’s space for an internal 2.5in
SATA hard drive, which is necessary
for PVR use (although the box could
be set up for networked drives and
USB devices instead). WoS can
‘pre-install’ a 500GB or 1TB drive,
if desired. The two ‘super sensitive’
tuners are built onto the main circuit
board, and are covered by a small
screening can.
Aerial connections are associated
with the unit’s on-board UHF
modulator, which is handy for
feeding screens in other rooms via
coaxial cable. At the other end of the
AV quality spectrum is an HDMI port,
which supports 1080p video. You
also get Scart, optical digital and
phono jacks for composite video
and stereo audio. Data connectivity
comprises RS232, Ethernet and two

Features
remote folders for recording and
multimedia playback purposes. The
machine’s own HDD can be shared
(there’s a uPnP server too) enabling
contents to be accessible to other
networked devices.
Basic use
Pressing the ‘sat’ button reveals
the channel database in all its
bouquet-organised glory. These
lists can be sorted by ‘satellite’,
‘provider’ or user- dened ‘favourites’
– you can create as many of the
latter as is needed.
The channel up/down keys, as
you’d expect, selects the next or
previous service in the channel list.
Pressing ‘enter’ once gives pop-up
information about the current
channel; pressing it again yields
EPG-derived programme details.
As with the OpenPLI-based TM-Twin
OE (reviewed last month), the TM-2T
OE as tested here is pre-installed
with the timeline-based ‘CrossEPG’
plugin, which automatically
downloads scheduling information
to circumvent the limitations of now/
next only DVB schedules.
By default, you’re shown a
timeline format although single
channel lists are also available.
Setting the timer to record or
change channels is the press of a
button away, and there’s a ‘search’
feature. Highlight a lm in the EPG,
and you can even read its entry on
IMDB. It’s easy to toggle between
radio and TV modes, while subtitles,
teletext and soundtrack selection
are all present and correct – as is a
picture ‘zoom’ feature.
